“GivingTuesday this year is December 1st and was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, it has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.”
Over the last 200 plus years the Scudder Association Foundation’s mission has gone on to include financial support and assistance to the Scudder medical missions in Ranipet, and Vellore, India. Encouraging the spirit of service, and the Foundation has long supported scholarships for those seeking careers in medicine, social services and spiritual guidance.
Organized on Washington’s Birthday,1912, by descendants of the American pioneers, Thomas Scudder (Salem, Massachusetts, 1637) and John Scudder (Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1635). It was founded “in the belief that the bond of kinship would prove strong enough to weld us into a powerful society, membership in which should be an inspiration to generation after generation of American Scudders and their descendants, wherever they may be found, the world over.
With the holiday season quickly approaching us, we need to take time to reflect on their dedication, everlasting efforts, and vision by continuing to support the efforts of these ancestors who gave their lives to fulfill their missions.
The Foundation is sponsoring six categories for donations:
Education Grants: – Established funds specifically to provide scholarships for those seeking careers in: Medical and Nursing Studies, Social Services (Teaching – Psychological Counseling – Public Social Services Studies),and Divinity (Religious and Spiritual Studies) for students attending educational institutions in the USA.
India Grants Program – This program provides funding for general and specific support to all of the India organizations which has included several schools started by members of the Scudder family.
After a very eventful and uncertain year, it’s safe to say we are holding on to the good times even closer. The hospitals in India have been very busy with the Covid-19 pandemic with upgrading and adding more bed capability in order to be able to respond to the increase in demand for care. These facilities need our help now even more to continue the needed care and to provide for the care of their own front-line medical staff.
Christian Medical College – CMC Vellore was founded by an American, Dr. Ida S. Scudder. Born in South India in 1870, she spent most of her childhood in the US and was educated there. In 1899 was one of the first woman graduates of Cornell Medical as a doctor, she returned to Vellore to provide medical care for the women and children
Jawadhi Hills – CMC’s Community Health & Development, or CHAD, has provided comfort and care along with the promise of improved health and sanitary conditions to the fiercely autonomous 80,000 villagers of Jawadhi Hills, since the 1980’s. The villages are perched 4,000 feet above and to west of Vellore.
Scudder Memorial Hospital – Wilhelmina Noordyk Nursing Scholarship – Over her 35 years of service she become the first Nursing Superintendent of the Scudder Memorial Hospital, in Ranipet, India. This campaign which will help support nursing students for their education with an added bonus offer by either partial or full funding of tuition assistance for a semester.
Scudder Memorial Hospital – Scudder Memorial Hospital has been providing quality healthcare for the past 150 years in and around Ranipet. The History of the hospital dates back to the middle of 19th century when Dr. Silas Downer Scudder started the hospital in Ranipet on March 17, 1866.
